Women Now Hold 35% of CBN Director Positions

Women now make up 35% of directors at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and hold half of its non-executive board positions.

Speaking at the grand finale of the International Women’s Day (IWD) celebrations at CBN Headquarters, Governor Olayemi Cardoso reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to gender-balanced leadership.

The event marked the conclusion of a month-long IWD programme, reinforcing CBN’s dedication to inclusive and representative leadership.

“Increasing women’s representation in leadership is not just ethical; it is a strategic necessity,” Cardoso stated.

The appointment of six new female directors marks a record-breaking achievement, further strengthening diverse perspectives at the bank’s top levels.

Cardoso also acknowledged the contributions of existing female directors and key advisers, including Dr. Daphne Dafinone, Dr. Nkiru Balonwu, and Ms. Shola Phillips, whose expertise continues to shape policy direction.

Honouring Female Leadership and Achievements
Deputy Governor, Corporate Services, Ms. Emem Usoro, highlighted the urgency of accelerating gender equity, citing a World Economic Forum report projecting full gender parity by 2054.

The event also featured the Inspiring Women Award, an initiative recognizing outstanding female staff across CBN branches. Out of 806 nominations, 28 women received awards from branches in Awka, Dutse, Yola, Gombe, Osogbo, Kaduna, Enugu, and Birnin Kebbi.

Deputy Governor Emem Usoro received the Amazon Award for outstanding leadership, while ten female directors were honoured as Trailblazers, and 18 others were celebrated for their contributions.

Cardoso reiterated CBN’s commitment to removing structural barriers and fostering opportunities for women, ensuring sustained progress toward gender equity in leadership.
