A devastating windstorm struck the Mahanga community in Awe Local Government Area of Nasarawa State on Friday night, leaving widespread destruction in its wake. According to reports gathered on Saturday, no fewer than 50 houses were affected, with many homes losing their roofs and some completely collapsing, thereby rendering numerous residents homeless.
James Arthur, one of the community leaders, disclosed the extent of the damage during an interview with journalists in Lafia, the state capital. He passionately appealed to the Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, the local government chairman, and other relevant political office holders to intervene swiftly to assist the affected families. Arthur highlighted the urgent need for relief, emphasizing that the disaster had not only damaged homes but also critical infrastructure, including the community’s school.

“We, the residents of Mahanga community in Awe Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, are writing to bring to your attention the devastating impact of a severe windstorm that hit our community yesterday,” Arthur stated. He further explained that the community was now grappling with the aftermath, facing critical shortages of shelter and basic necessities.
The community leader made a heartfelt plea for immediate government and public support, requesting the provision of relief materials, temporary shelters, and other forms of assistance to help them recover from the disaster. He stressed that a timely intervention would significantly alleviate the suffering of the displaced households and help restore some semblance of normalcy to the battered community.
The incident adds to the growing list of weather-related challenges confronting rural communities in Nigeria, particularly during the rainy season when storms and floods often wreak havoc. As of the time of reporting, the Mahanga community continues to await urgent help to rebuild their lives after the devastation.
