Wike Explains Reasons Behind Apo-Karshi Road Rehabilitation

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr. Nyesom Wike, has provided insights into the ongoing rehabilitation of the long-delayed Apo-Karshi road, emphasizing the need to alleviate the suffering of residents in the area.

Wike made the remarks during an inspection of the 13-kilometre road project in Abuja, which was originally awarded in 2011 but has faced numerous delays.

Wike revealed that the FCT Administration has already paid over 86% of the total contract value, leaving a balance of N3 billion. He acknowledged the setbacks that have affected the project’s progress, stating, “A lot has happened since the award of the contract, but it wasn’t good at all. We have no choice but to ensure the poor do not suffer.”

The minister explained that the road is crucial for reducing traffic congestion and boosting economic activities in the region. He assured the public that the FCT Administration is determined to complete the project without being accused of playing politics. “It is a project that is very dear to us. We know the importance of this road, and many people are eager to see it completed,” Wike said.

Initially, the project was expected to be delivered within six to seven months, but due to procurement issues, the contractor was only recently mobilized to the site. Wike noted that the contractor has now revised the completion date to April 2025, though he expressed doubts about meeting the deadline. “I still have my doubts. But let’s give them the benefit of the doubt, and if I see significant progress during my next visit, I will recommend releasing the remaining funds,” he added.

When asked about the possibility of canceling the contract, Wike cautioned against such a move, highlighting the financial and legal implications of revoking ongoing projects. He stressed the importance of encouraging the contractor to finish the road on time, with frequent inspections to ensure progress. “From time to time, I will come here to see that this project is completed on schedule,” he noted.

Wike also provided an update on rehabilitating the Karshi-Nyanya road, an 18-kilometre stretch that has been in poor condition for years. He explained that following a visit in July, he raised concerns about the state of the road with President Bola Tinubu, who approved its immediate rehabilitation, including installing streetlights. The project is expected to be completed in eight months.

The rehabilitation of both the Apo-Karshi and Karshi-Nyanya roads is seen as critical to improving transportation and infrastructure within the FCT, with Wike affirming the administration’s commitment to completing these vital projects for the benefit of residents.
