Former President Barack Obama cut a lonely figure as he arrived at Donald Trump’s inauguration today without his wife, fueling divorce rumours further.
The 44th President of the United States donned a black suit and striped tie, smiling and waving at reporters as he walked into the Capitol on his own.
It was confirmed last week that Michelle would not be attending the president-elect’s swearing-in but her office did not give any further explanation in its brief statement.
The former first lady’s choice to skip Trump’s inauguration is said to be because she doesn’t want to “plaster” on a smile for someone she believes is a threat to American democracy.

Michelle decided to pass on the plus-one offer
However, Michelle’s lack of explanation has sparked even more rumours she and her husband are heading towards divorce.
The decision represents an unusual break from traditional protocol, in which former presidents and their spouses typically attend presidential inaugurations regardless of party affiliations.
This isn’t the first time Michelle has been absent from key events, notably last week she missed Jimmy Carter’s state funeral last week due to a “scheduling conflict”.
The snap shared by Obama tried to dispel divorce rumours
Mr Obama did his best to dispel rumours of a split from his wife, Michelle, by posting a gushing social media post to celebrate her birthday last week
As Michelle turned 61 on Friday, Obama took to social media to pay a gushing tribute to his wife on her special day. “Happy birthday to the love of my life, @MichelleObama,” the politician penned on X. “You fill every room with warmth, wisdom, humour, and grace – and you look good doing it. I’m so lucky to be able to take on life’s adventures with you. Love you!”
In the snap posted by the former president, the married couple can be seen holding hands and smiling across a large table.
