VP Shettima, Speaker Abbas Collaborate to Tackle Flooding in Borno, Other States

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, met with Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Presidential Villa in Abuja to discuss the devastating flooding in Maiduguri, Borno State.

The meeting aimed to commiserate with the VP, who hails from Borno State, and brainstorm immediate intervention measures.

President Bola Tinubu had earlier ordered the deployment of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to assist flood victims, describing the flood as the “worst in recent decades.”

The disaster has displaced one million people and affected critical facilities like the State Specialist Hospital and University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.

After the meeting, Abbas said, “I am here today to commiserate with His Excellency, the Vice President, over the devastating flooding incidents in Maiduguri… We have designed strategies and solutions to bring succour to the victims.”

He also mentioned the N3 billion intervention funds earmarked for flood victims, assuring that measures are in place for even distribution.

Abbas highlighted that beyond Borno, intervention measures are being considered for flood-prone states like Kaduna, saying, “We are making efforts with the Governor of Niger state to see what we can do from our end as NASS to help, and all other states that are affected we will do what we can to help.”
