US Condemns Boko Haram, Suspends Foreign Aid for Review

The United States Mission to Nigeria has strongly condemned Boko Haram’s atrocities and reaffirmed its commitment to counterterrorism efforts.

On January 20, 2025, US President Donald Trump suspended foreign aid for 90 days, citing global destabilization and misalignment concerns

“Comprehensive monitoring and evaluation systems are in place to help verify that US assistance reaches intended recipients,” the mission stated.

The US also denounced Boko Haram’s continued violence, emphasizing its disregard for human life and regional stability.

“The United States condemns the violence and blatant disregard for human life perpetrated by Boko Haram and other terrorist groups in Nigeria and the region,” it declared.

Boko Haram was officially designated a Foreign Terrorist Organization by the US Secretary of State on November 14, 2013.

This designation blocks the group’s assets, restricts its fundraising efforts, prosecutes its members, and prevents them from entering the United States.

The US government pledged continued collaboration with Nigeria and regional partners to combat terrorism and enhance security in West Africa.
