An articulated truck driver sustained severe fractures in both arms on Saturday after his vehicle plunged off the Pen Cinema Bridge in the Agege area of Lagos, crashing onto two commercial buses parked below.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident in a statement by its spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq.
According to Taofiq, preliminary investigations revealed that the driver lost control while navigating the bridge, causing the truck, registered as GGE 624 YJ, to fall onto the buses stationed underneath.
“LASTMA hereby notifies the general public of a grave traffic incident involving a fully-laden articulated truck and two painted commercial Volkswagen buses along Agege, Old Abeokuta Road,” Taofiq stated.
LASTMA officers quickly responded, rescuing the injured driver and handing him over to officers of the Elere Police Division. He was later transported to the General Hospital in Ile-Epo for urgent medical care.
The accident scene was cordoned off to prevent further incidents, while operatives of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) cleared the wreckage to restore normal traffic flow.
Reacting to the crash, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, sympathized with the injured driver and urged motorists to maintain caution, stressing the importance of adhering to speed limits and other road safety measures.
He also reiterated the need for strict compliance with the newly installed speed-limiting devices across Lagos to prevent such accidents and promote safer roadways.
Bakare-Oki extended heartfelt wishes for the driver’s quick and full recovery.
