1. President Bola Tinubu has joined other world leaders to condemn the assassination attempt on former US president Donald Trump at an election rally. Other world leaders and governments, who reacted with shock to the assassination attempt, spoke against political violence and expressed their support for those affected by Saturday’s shooting, which killed one bystander and left two other spectators critically wounded.

 

2. The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Arc Ahmed Dangiwa will receive a United Kingdom delegation to the Africa International Housing Show (AIHS). The gathering between the minister and the 20-member delegation led by the UK Department of Trade and Investment is expected to bring valuable insight and foster collaboration between the Nigerian government and UK representatives, ultimately promoting greater investment in the country’s housing sector.

 

3. Infrastructural activities in the construction and real estate sector increased in their contribution to Nigeria’s real Gross Domestic Product in Q1 2024. According to the latest data released by the Nigeria Bureau of Statistics recently, the sector contributed N11.2tn in the quarter compared to the N9.1tn generated in the fourth quarter of 2023. The report stated that the real estate sector contributed 5.20 percent to the GDP in Q1 of 2024, while the construction sector contributed 4.0 percent of the GDP in Q1 of 2024.

4. Family members living in the boys’ quarters behind a story building on No 49 Oyinlola Street, Off Adealu Bus Stop, Iyana Ipaja, Lagos State, escaped death by a whisker when the quarters caved in on Saturday. Following the collapse, people in the area alerted emergency responders including the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, which stormed the premises to observe the situation.

5. The Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria has blamed government negligence in law enforcement for the surge in the collapse of buildings resulting in several deaths. Chairman of the Council, Dr. Samson Opaluwah made this known while reacting to the recent collapse of a building in Kubwa, Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, and a Jos school building. He said severe punishment should be for all those found wanting to prevent reoccurrence.

 

6. The National Parents-Teacher Association of Nigeria (NAPTAN) says strict penalties should be imposed on culprits of school building collapses in the country. The association’s call comes on the heels of the collapse of a school building in Jos, Plateau state, and a residential building in Abuja. On July 12, a two-storey building of the Saint Academy, a primary and secondary school in Jos collapsed, killing about 22 people and injuring 132 others.

 

7. The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has suspended the enforcement of electronic central motor registry registration for vehicle owners in the country. The Force Spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, had on Saturday said the IG ordered that the enforcement of the e-CMR should commence on July 29. The enforcement order sparked an outcry from Nigerians, who accused the police of creating an opportunity to extort vehicle owners.

 

8. A Court of Appeal in the United Kingdom has dismissed the appeal of Process & Industrial Development, P&ID, on a previous judgment halting the enforcement of its $11 billion award against Nigeria. In a unanimous decision, Lord Justice Snowden, the lead judge, permitted P&ID to appeal the judgment but dismissed the appeal.

9. Africa’s richest man, Mr Aliko Dangote, has said the house he stays whenever he is in Nigeria’s capital city is not his personal property. During a Sunday media parley at the Dangote Petroleum Refinery, Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos State, Dangote said his passion for an industrialized Nigeria is the sole reason he doesn’t have houses outside Nigeria.

 

10. The Nigeria Labour Congress, Abia State chapter has shelved its proposed indefinite strike earlier scheduled to kick off on Monday. This followed a two-day meeting between the Abia State government, organized labor, and members of the joint negotiation council. According to a communique issued at the end of the meeting, the Abia State government and the organized labor arrived at the payment of N15,000 wage award to civil servants for three months, starting from the end of July 2024.
