A storey building in Ekosodin community, near the University of Benin in Edo State, collapsed during a heavy downpour, trapping several students inside.
The incident, which occurred on Ekhator Street, has left multiple people injured, with rescue operations ongoing to free those still trapped beneath the rubble.
Ekosodin, known for its large student population due to its proximity to the University of Benin, was shaken by the collapse. According to eyewitnesses, some of the trapped students were rescued by the university’s emergency response team and rushed to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.
A student, who requested anonymity, told reporters that several occupants had sustained severe injuries. He confirmed that efforts were still being made to rescue others who remained trapped inside the collapsed structure.

The Edo State Fire Service responded to the scene, with an official from the control room confirming that their team was actively involved in the rescue operation. However, details on the exact number of victims still trapped remained unclear as of press time.
