Senate Backs Public-Private Partnerships to Tackle Nigeria’s Housing Deficit

The Senate Committee on Land, Housing, and Urban Development has reaffirmed its support for Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) to address Nigeria’s housing deficit.

Speaking at the Renewed Hope Housing PPP Summit in Abuja, Committee Chairman, Senator Aminu Tambuwal, stressed the urgency of collaboration.

“Housing is not just a fundamental need; it drives economic growth. Millions lack access to affordable and decent shelter,” he said.

Tambuwal emphasized the importance of integrating private-sector innovation with government policies, regulations, and financial support.

He assured stakeholders of the Senate’s commitment to enacting laws that ensure transparency and remove bureaucratic bottlenecks.

“As a committee, we pledge to support progressive policies that foster sustainable housing development through legislative reforms,” he said.

Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, acknowledged past failures in housing policy implementation.

“Despite several policies, lack of political will, inconsistent implementation, and poor coordination have hindered housing sector progress,” he said.

Dangiwa reaffirmed the government’s commitment to overcoming these challenges under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

He revealed ongoing efforts to gather accurate housing data through partnerships with the National Population Commission.

Nigeria’s housing deficit is estimated at over 20 million units, requiring over ₦5 trillion in annual investment, Dangiwa noted.

He highlighted key PPP projects, including the development of seven Renewed Hope Cities in major locations nationwide.

A 5,000-unit affordable housing initiative with Shelter Afrique Development Bank is also underway, he announced.

“Construction is progressing on 6,612 housing units across the FCT, Lagos, and Kano as part of the initiative,” he said.

Summit convener, Dr. Olayemi Rotsimo-Shodome, lauded stakeholders’ engagement in addressing Nigeria’s housing challenges.

He stressed the importance of translating agreements into action, ensuring real housing solutions for Nigerians.
