Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has announced a new minimum wage of ₦85,000 for workers in the state, with plans to increase it to ₦100,000 by January 2025.
He made this disclosure during an interview on Wednesday, October 16, 2024.
Sanwo-Olu discussed various issues impacting residents, including transportation, road infrastructure, and efforts to alleviate the economic challenges faced by citizens amid widespread hardship in Nigeria.
Addressing the wage increase, the Governor clarified that Lagos’ ₦85,000 minimum wage is based on the state’s financial capability and is not meant to compete with other states. “It’s not a competition. We are not paying more than others to outshine them. It’s about affordability and capacity, especially given the high cost of living in Lagos,” he explained.
Sanwo-Olu highlighted that the state had already raised workers’ salaries earlier in the year and expressed his intention to further improve their earnings. “By January 2025, I hope to announce an increase in the minimum wage to ₦100,000 because I want my people to have a living wage. I want them to know that the government is working for them,” he said.
The Governor emphasized his commitment to ensuring that the wage increase would provide meaningful relief for Lagos workers, making the state more livable amidst the current economic difficulties.
