Final rites for Pope Francis will be held this Saturday at 10:00 a.m. local time in the iconic St. Peter’s Square, the Vatican revealed on Tuesday.

Following the outdoor funeral Mass, his body will be taken into St. Peter’s Basilica, before proceeding to the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome, where he will be laid to rest.

The Holy See had earlier confirmed the passing of the 88-year-old pontiff on Easter Monday at his residence, Casa Santa Marta, within Vatican City.

The Camerlengo of the Apostolic Chamber, Cardinal Kevin Farrell, made the official announcement, stating the Pope passed away peacefully at 7:35 a.m.

Sources close to the Vatican indicated that the cause of death was related to a combination of a stroke and heart failure.

Pope Francis, known for his humility and reformist stance, has been widely described as a guiding light in a turbulent global era.
