Parents of pupils at Local Education Authority (LEA) Primary School, Jijimgba, in Kuje Area Council, FCT, are withdrawing their children due to poor infrastructure and teacher shortages.
The parents lamented that students sit on bare floors for lessons, while teachers use windows as seats due to the lack of desks and chairs in classrooms.
Dilapidated Infrastructure Hampers Learning
During a visit by Abuja Metro on Saturday, parents revealed that the only classroom block was built 18 years ago through community efforts.
The mud-block structure has deteriorated despite maintenance efforts by the community, leaving it unsafe for learning.
Chairman of the Parents Teachers Association (PTA), Mr. Danjuma Enoch Bako, explained that classrooms for primary 1 to 3 are now merged with primary 4, worsening the learning environment.

He said, “The situation is worse during the rainy season because floods disrupt lessons in the overcrowded classrooms.”
Pupils, Teachers Sit on Windows
Bako added that primary 5 classrooms had their roofs blown off by wind, further reducing available learning spaces.
He said, “Most classes lack desks and chairs for both pupils and teachers, forcing teachers to sit on windows during lessons.”
A teacher at the school, Mr. Silas Alkali, who hails from the community, confirmed the severe shortage of teachers.
Despite having 161 pupils, the school lacks adequate teachers to cover core subjects, affecting the quality of education.
Call for Government Intervention
Alkali urged the Local Education Authority (LEA) Kuje to deploy more teachers, as those posted often seek transfers due to security concerns.
An LEA official confirmed that the situation had been reported to the council chairman for necessary action.
