The Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB) has called on the government to enforce stricter building control measures and compliance standards during its 2025 Builders Day celebration in Abuja.

Speaking at the event, the institute’s President, Bldr. Sir Alderton Ewa Ewa, stressed that effective building control and regulatory compliance are crucial for achieving sustainable construction.

He emphasized that builders play a frontline role in enforcing standards and regulations to ensure that every structure meets safety, durability, and environmental sustainability requirements.

“Our role in this regard is vital in addressing key challenges within the construction industry, such as unauthorized building practices, environmental degradation, and the use of substandard materials,” he said.

Mr. Ewa urged builders to uphold compliance with building regulations, supervise and enforce quality standards, promote sustainable building practices, collaborate with regulatory authorities, raise public awareness, and advocate for the full domestication of the National Building Code.

He also highlighted the alarming frequency of building collapses and the threat posed by unqualified individuals infiltrating the industry.

“The frequent cases of building collapse in our society are not only alarming but also a tragic reminder of the need for strict adherence to building regulations, professional ethics, and standard construction practices,” he stated.

“Quackery remains one of the biggest threats to the building industry. Untrained and unlicensed individuals continue to infiltrate the profession, carrying out substandard work that leads to structural defects and, in the worst cases, deadly collapses.”

Also speaking at the event, Bldr. Bimbo Kolade, the 1st Vice President of the institute, reaffirmed NIOB’s commitment to advocating for better regulation and collaborating with other professionals in the built environment to ensure compliance with building standards and procedures.
