The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather forecast warning of hazy and cloudy conditions across Nigeria from Monday to Wednesday.
According to the forecast, there will be a moderate dust haze on Monday, reducing horizontal visibility to between 2km and 5km in northern cities.
In certain parts of the northern region, including Jigawa, Katsina, Kano, Yobe, Sokoto, Zamfara, and Kebbi States, visibility could drop to less than 1000m during the forecast period. The North Central region will also experience moderate dust haze, with similar visibility conditions expected in parts of Niger.
In the southern parts of Nigeria, hazy skies with patches of clouds are predicted over inland cities and along the coastal belt during the morning hours. However, thunderstorms are likely later in the day in several southern states, including Ondo, Edo, Ogun, Lagos, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Rivers, Delta, and Cross River States.
Looking ahead to Tuesday, NiMet expects moderate dust haze to continue over the northern and North Central regions, along with areas like Oyo, Ekiti, Ondo, Ebonyi, and Enugu. Other parts of the South will remain hazy, with clouds scattered across the region.
Strong winds may precede the thunderstorms in areas where they are expected. NiMet has advised the public to take precautionary measures and follow safety guidelines issued by relevant authorities, especially due to the presence of dust particles in the air.
The agency also urged airline operators to check specific weather reports for airports to plan their flights effectively. NiMet cautioned individuals, particularly those with asthma or respiratory conditions, to be mindful of the weather conditions and protect their health during this period.
