Ota, Ogun State — Real estate professionals have reiterated that Nigeria remains significantly behind in meeting its housing needs, with the country’s estimated housing deficit now at 28 million units.

The experts made this known during a medical outreach held in Ota, Ogun State, in celebration of the 75th birthday of renowned real estate icon, Chief Jide Taiwo. The event, organized by former staff of Jide Taiwo & Co., also featured a grand birthday celebration in Lagos.

Surveyor Yemi Olugbenle, who spoke at the outreach, lamented the widening gap in the nation’s housing sector. “In Nigeria, we are still far below the required housing needs. It is very important that the private sector and the government work collaboratively to deliver housing at a reasonable cost,” he emphasized.

Chief Jide Taiwo, in his remarks, urged government at all levels to improve accessibility to property and funding, which he said are key to reducing the housing shortfall. “Governments must create enabling conditions to make properties and funds more accessible to Nigerians. This is essential in closing the housing deficit,” he said.

The outreach, which aimed to give back to the community, provided free medical services to over 500 residents. Beneficiaries received free eye tests, medical check-ups, sugar level screenings, blood pressure tests, health consultations, medications, and prescription glasses.

Speaking about her father, Mrs. Jumoke Anifalaje, Vice Chairman of Jide Taiwo & Co., described Chief Taiwo as a passionate humanitarian. “He finds joy in making a positive impact in people’s lives. This medical outreach is one way of improving healthcare access in this community, and a fitting tribute to his legacy,” she stated.

The event not only celebrated a real estate legend but also brought attention to a pressing national issue, as experts called for renewed efforts to tackle the country’s persistent housing crisis.
