NIA President Advocates for Bold Actions to Address Urban Planning Challenges in Nigeria

The Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA) has called on the government and stakeholders to foster an environment that allows architects to drive significant social change in urban centers.

This call to action comes from NIA President Mobolaji Adeniyi, who emphasized the critical role architects play in transforming urban landscapes.

Speaking at the Commonwealth Association of Architects (CAA) general assembly and symposium in Kigali, Rwanda, Adeniyi led a delegation of 15 Nigerian architects from various sectors. The symposium, themed “Education, Policy, and Practice; Advancing the Declaration on Sustainable Urbanisation in the Commonwealth,” highlighted the universal challenges faced by architects globally.

Adeniyi noted the stark contrast between the transformation of Kigali—once a city marred by conflict and now a vibrant metropolis with green spaces and iconic structures—and the urban chaos prevalent in Nigerian cities. She underscored the need for improved urban planning, better infrastructure, and environmental conservation in Nigeria.

“The example of Kigali serves as a powerful reminder of what can be achieved with vision and commitment. In Nigeria, despite our challenges, we have the potential to transform our cities if we unite and leverage our natural and human resources effectively,” Adeniyi said.

She also urged architects to pursue political influence and engage more actively in shaping policies that affect urban development. “We must be bold enough to seek political power and influence through the ballot, understanding that policymakers hold significant sway over our profession’s impact,” she added.

The NIA President highlighted that the conference underscored the need to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and practical skills, and to develop entrepreneurial capabilities within the profession. She called on architects to draw inspiration from successful international models and to celebrate their strengths as they tackle Nigeria’s urban planning issues.

Adeniyi’s remarks were a clarion call for architects to step up and lead efforts to address the pressing urban challenges facing Nigeria, reinforcing their role not just as designers but as pivotal drivers of societal change.
