NDDC to Build Emergency Shelters Amid Flooding

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) is set to build six multi-purpose emergency shelters across Bayelsa, Delta, and Rivers states to support Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the event of future floods.

Samuel Ogbuku, Managing Director of NDDC, revealed the initiative during a press conference at the Commission’s headquarters in Port Harcourt. He emphasized that these shelters are part of a proactive strategy to address the perennial flooding issues in the Niger Delta region.

The facilities will be equipped with essential amenities, including schools, hospitals, cafeterias, police posts, and recreational centers to provide comprehensive support during crises. Construction sites include Otuokpoti and Odi in Bayelsa State, Patani and Ozorro in Delta State, and two locations in Rivers State.

Ogbuku also highlighted ongoing efforts to enhance security and peace in the region through the “Light Up the Niger Delta” campaign, which aims to install solar-powered street lights. This initiative has reportedly reduced crime rates and boosted local commercial activities.

In addition, Ogbuku announced the upcoming launch of the Holistic Opportunities Programme of Engagement (HOPE) in Port Harcourt at the end of the month. This program, along with the NDDC Youth Internship Scheme, focuses on entrepreneurial and skills development to empower youths in the region.

The NDDC is also advancing technological and educational support by distributing 45,000 U-lesson tablets to schools across the Niger Delta to improve educational outcomes for children.

Among the NDDC’s recent achievements are several key infrastructure projects: the 25.7-kilometer Ogbia-Nembe Road completed with Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), the 132KV transmission line and substation at Okitipupa, a 1×15 MVA substation in Amufi, Edo State, the 600-meter Ibeno Bridge in Akwa Ibom State, and the 9-kilometer Obehie to Oke Ikpe Road in Abia State.
