A violent confrontation erupted in Abuja when security forces opened fire on Shi’ite protesters during an International Quds Day procession.
The deadly incident occurred near Banex Plaza in Wuse 2, where thousands of Islamic Movement members gathered to show solidarity with Palestinians.
Security forces, using armoured vehicles, blocked the procession route after Jummah prayers and allegedly fired indiscriminately at the crowd.
A senior sect member confirmed they initially planned to assemble at the National Mosque but changed location to avoid confrontation.

He stated that security forces occupied the National Mosque, forcing protesters to proceed towards the Customs Office in Abuja.
The situation escalated when military personnel confronted them near Banex Plaza, leading to shootings and multiple casualties.
Eyewitnesses reported that military officers were present without police support, blocking roads and detaining several protesters.
A Hilux van was seen carrying at least one body, while several injured individuals were transported to nearby hospitals.
Reports suggest a confidential memo was circulated instructing security forces to act against processions in specific locations nationwide.
Despite similar processions happening across Nigeria, Abuja was the only location where violence was reported against protesters.
Authorities have yet to release an official statement regarding the shootings or confirm the authenticity of the leaked memo.
