The Lagos State government has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining high standards in construction by declaring zero tolerance for the use of substandard materials.
Builders and developers have been warned against using inferior materials, with the government vowing strict enforcement of structural regulations across the state.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ forum organized with the Association of Real Estate Developers of Nigeria, the General Manager of Lagos State Materials Testing Laboratory Agency, Engr. Olayinka Abdul, emphasized the need for quality and safety in all construction projects. She called on developers, engineers, and builders to adhere to the highest standards to ensure the durability and safety of structures within the state.
Abdul highlighted Lagos State’s rapid growth as a metropolitan hub, pointing out the crucial role of the real estate sector in driving economic development. However, she noted that this growth comes with a shared responsibility to uphold safety and quality.
“As developers, engineers, and builders, it is imperative that we uphold the highest standards of quality and safety in all construction projects,” Abdul stated. “This requires a mutual understanding of regulatory guidelines and their critical roles in the built environment.”
She further explained the significance of regulatory frameworks in shaping real estate development, ensuring projects are executed with public safety, innovation, and investment in mind.
Abdul outlined the rigorous materials testing process employed by the agency, which includes scientific evaluations of construction materials such as soil, water, cement, granite, blocks, and sand to meet safety standards. She also announced that all construction materials entering Lagos State would undergo thorough scrutiny, and manufacturers would be held accountable for compliance with quality standards.
The Chairman of the Association of Real Estate Developers of Lagos State, Chief Bashiru Lawal, echoed the government’s stance, urging developers to prioritize safety, quality, and adherence to building codes in all projects.
This initiative underscores the government’s determination to foster a safe and sustainable built environment while reinforcing Lagos State’s position as a leading hub for real estate development in Nigeria.
