Lagos State Govt Commits to Infrastructure Renewal on Lagos Island

The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to the ongoing renewal of infrastructure on Lagos Island.

On Sunday, the state Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, led ministry officials on an inspection tour to assess alignments for drains and collectors slated for reconstruction as part of the urban regeneration project.

Speaking to journalists during the inspection, Wahab highlighted the urgency of addressing flooding challenges on Lagos Island, which have posed significant risks to lives and property.

“This tour became necessary as the governor has re-awarded the regeneration of Lagos Island’s infrastructure. We need to ensure contractors are prepared to commence work and explore the possibility of reducing the project timeline from 24 months to 18 months or less,” he said.

Wahab emphasized the importance of resilient infrastructure and called on residents to take ownership of public facilities, reminding them that taxpayers’ funds are being deployed for the initiative.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment, Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu, reiterated that the urban regeneration project would provide a lasting solution to flooding in the area, assuring residents of the government’s continued efforts to maintain a clean and flood-free environment.

The project is part of the government’s broader vision to enhance urban resilience and improve the quality of life for residents of Lagos Island.
