Lagos Mandates Noise Permits for Churches, Mosques, and Nightclubs

In a bid to create a quieter and healthier environment for residents, the Lagos State Government has introduced stricter measures to combat noise pollution. From now on, nightclubs, lounges, bars, and worship centres must obtain permits for any events involving amplified sound.

This move, according to the state government, is designed to protect the health and well-being of residents, especially during the festive season when noise levels tend to spike. The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, shared the news on his official X account (formerly Twitter), stressing that the government will no longer tolerate excessive noise in Lagos neighborhoods.

Wahab explained that all events with amplified sound must be held in soundproof, enclosed spaces to minimize disturbances to nearby residents. “Whether it’s a worship centre, nightclub, lounge, or bar, these establishments are now required to secure permits and ensure their activities comply with the new noise control guidelines,” he stated.

To ensure compliance, the Lagos State Government has set up a Special Task Force on Noise Pollution under the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA). This task force will work in partnership with the Lagos State Neighborhood Safety Corps (LSNSC) and the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) to monitor activities, apprehend offenders, and prosecute violators of the noise regulations.

By taking this decisive action, the Lagos State Government aims to foster a more peaceful atmosphere across the state while prioritizing the comfort and well-being of its residents.
