Lagos State Governor Babatunde Sanwo-Olu has issued a stern warning against the blatant disregard of building codes, emphasizing the serious consequences of non-compliance.
Speaking at the second edition of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) event themed “Professionalism Across Board in the Built Environment,” Sanwo-Olu stressed the critical need for adherence to building regulations to address the pervasive issue of building collapses in Nigeria.

Sanwo-Olu highlighted that strict adherence to building codes by professionals could significantly mitigate the risk of structural failures. “One major challenge we face as a government is the lack of compliance with building codes, which often leads to disregard for regulations by homeowners and developers,” he noted.
The Governor underscored the importance of building safely to ensure that structures are secure, healthy, and sustainable for future generations. “It is crucial to enforce building regulations rigorously to prevent illegal, poorly constructed buildings that threaten the well-being of Lagosians,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu called for the engagement of only qualified professionals in the construction industry, including builders, architects, structural and civil engineers, geologists, as well as mechanical and electrical engineers. “Engaging these professionals can address up to 70 percent of the challenges related to building collapses in the state. Therefore, it is now mandatory for all building projects to involve the relevant professionals,” he concluded.
