Kogi State Governor Approves N72,500 Minimum Wage for Workers

Kogi State Governor Ahmed Ododo has officially approved a new minimum wage of N72,500 for workers in the state, effective immediately.

The announcement was made on Monday at the Government House in Lokoja, where Governor Ododo received and signed the report presented by the Minimum Wage Committee, chaired by Elijah Evinemi, the Kogi State Head of Service.

During the signing ceremony, Governor Ododo acknowledged the collaborative efforts between the government and labor unions that led to this decision. He emphasized that this increase is not merely a favor but a right for workers, underlining his administration’s commitment to their welfare.

“I commend the committee for their diligent work. What we are doing today is not a favor but a right of the workers. My administration is dedicated to ensuring that the welfare of workers is prioritized,” he stated. The Governor noted that the new minimum wage will be implemented starting this October, reaffirming his administration’s pledge to serve the people of Kogi State faithfully.

In addition to the wage increase, Governor Ododo announced the suspension of withholding tax from civil servants’ salaries for one year. He stated that these measures are in fulfillment of his promises to the people and to enhance the financial well-being of workers in the state. “We are not doing anybody a favor; we are fulfilling our obligations. The resources of the state belong to you all, and I am here as your chief servant,” he added.

Having previously served as a labor leader, Governor Ododo expressed his understanding of the challenges faced by civil servants. He reassured them that he would leverage state resources to provide relief and improve conditions for the workforce. “I will not use my position to oppress anyone but to uplift the people. My government will continue to prioritize the welfare of workers,” he said.

The Governor also commended President Bola Tinubu for his recent approval of a minimum wage for federal workers, expressing Kogi State’s intention to align with the federal government’s efforts. Elijah Evinemi, the Chairman of the Minimum Wage Committee, expressed gratitude to the governor for establishing the committee and noted that the new wage agreement would undoubtedly bring joy to workers in Kogi State.

Similarly, Comrade Gabriel Amari, the State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), praised Governor Ododo for his inclusive approach and promised continued support for his administration. He highlighted the efficient implementation process that has seen Kogi State adopt a minimum wage in less than a month since the committee was established. “This is a significant achievement, and we will continue to cooperate with the governor to realize his plans for the state,” Amari stated. As Kogi State embarks on this new chapter in worker welfare, the administration’s focus on equitable resource allocation and worker rights is set to reshape the labor landscape in the region.
