In a sweeping move on Thursday, Kenyan President William Ruto announced the dismissal of nearly his entire cabinet as he begins consultations to form a “broad-based government” in response to widespread anti-government protests.
The dismissal affects all ministers, including the attorney-general, with the exception of Prime Cabinet Secretary and Foreign Minister Musalia Mudavadi and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Ruto explained that the decision came “upon reflection, listening keenly to what the people of Kenya have said and after a holistic appraisal of the performance of my cabinet and its achievements and challenges.”

The action follows largely peaceful protests led by young Gen-Z Kenyans, which have grown into a broader campaign against Ruto and his government. Some of these demonstrations have unfortunately turned deadly.
Ruto also stated that he will “immediately engage in extensive consultations across different sectors and political formations, with the aim of setting up a broad-based government.” He believes this new government will help him develop “radical programmes” to address the country’s massive debt, create more job opportunities, reduce government waste, and “slay the dragon of corruption.”
