As the National President of the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners (NITP), TPL Nathaniel Atebije term draws to a close, colleagues, friends, and industry leaders have gathered to celebrate his remarkable tenure and honor his leadership, mentorship, and significant contributions to the institute’s growth
Addressing the gathering in a night filled with heartfelt tributes and applause, Atebije expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve, reflecting on the milestones achieved during his presidency. He appreciated Barr. Festus Adebayo, Executive Director of the Housing Development Advocacy Network, for fostering a development partnership between the institute and ThinkLab Group to ensure that the NITP gets a befitting headquarters in Abuja to boost its productivity.
The outgoing National President of NITP also appreciated all the institute’s leaders, members and partners for their contributions to the development and success of the institute and his tenure while thanking the external auditors for their commitment and fearlessness.
Former President of the institute, Tpl Toyin Ayinde expressed optimism for the future, confident that Atebije’s legacy will endure. His tenure has been marked by significant achievements, both in terms of physical infrastructure and professional development, Ayinde noted. “As the hours count down to the end of his term, we are confident that the institute will continue to thrive under his influence,” he added. Ayinde acknowledged Atebije’s ability to raise the bar for future leaders of the NITP.
The National Secretary of the institute, Tpl. Olugbenga Ashiru, praised Atebije’s visionary leadership, citing significant infrastructure projects, such as the Town Planners Residential Estate, as clear examples of his commitment and dedication.
Ashiru added that Atebije’s leadership has been characterized by a commitment to transparency and the continuation of progressive initiatives. “I believe he has not only met but exceeded the expectations of many,” he said.
Also speaking, FCT chapter chairman, Tpl Lami Ayuba, shared her personal experiences with Atebije, highlighting the President’s mentorship. “He has been a mentor, a father, and a supporter, ensuring that I met his high expectations,” she said, recounting the professional bond they forged over the years. Atebije’s dedication to fostering relationships transcended professional boundaries, as many noted his ability to unite individuals across religious and ethnic lines.
The testimonies clearly described Atebije as a humble leader who prioritized the institute’s growth over personal accolades. One of his former colleagues recalled how, in moments of crisis, Atebije was always the first to offer a helping hand, often going out of his way to ensure the smooth running of operations.
Atebije’s mentorship extends beyond his immediate circle; the Director of FCT Development Control Department, Tpl Mukhtar Galadima, expressed gratitude for Atebije’s guidance and leadership, describing how Atebije’s influence helped shape the department. “His efforts were never about pride or personal gain,” he said, “but about ensuring that the institute moved forward.”
The valedictory session also served as a reminder of the importance of mentorship within the NITP as stakeholders urged younger planners to seek guidance from their elders, ensuring that the values of integrity and excellence, championed by Atebije, would be passed down to future generations.
The highlight of the event was an award presentation to key figures and organizations that have significantly contributed to the development of the housing sector. Notable Awards included the Distinguished Merit Award presented to Housing TV Africa, recognized for its advocacy and support toward the institute, as well as its exceptional role in promoting and advancing the housing and urban development sector.
Some staff of Housing TV Africa, Maimuna Bagudu and Phoebe Onwuabuije also received the distinguished merit award for their contribution to the institute through their advocacy, analysis and informing people about town planning and urban development. This recognition further solidifies the importance of public-private collaboration in addressing Nigeria’s housing challenges.
As the evening drew to a close, Atebije was once again recognized for his humility, wisdom, and ability to unite people toward a common goal. His colleagues praised his dedication to ensuring that the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners remains a beacon of professional excellence.
With his term ending, Atebije leaves behind a legacy of progress, innovation, and mentorship that will undoubtedly shape the future of urban planning in Nigeria for years to come.
