The Ministry of Housing and Urban Development and the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC) announced collaboration.

This partnership follows a meeting between Housing Minister Arc Ahmed Dangiwa and NCCC Director-General Dr. Nkiruka Maduekwe.

Dr. Maduekwe led a delegation to the Ministry’s office to explore areas of cooperation for climate resilience.

Minister Dangiwa emphasized urban areas contribute over 70% of global emissions, highlighting Nigeria’s rapid urbanization rate.

Dangiwa expressed commitment to UN SDGs 7, 11, and 13, focusing on sustainable cities and climate action.

He introduced the Renewed Hope Cities program, which aims to build 10,112 climate-resilient homes across 14 locations.

The National Urban Renewal and Slum Upgrade project has successfully completed interventions in 86 of 106 sites.

“The slum upgrades cover sanitation, roads, drainage, refuse disposal, and solar street lighting,” Dangiwa stated.

Dangiwa affirmed the Ministry’s collaboration with the IFC-EDGE Green Buildings Programme to design energy-efficient housing projects nationwide.

A workshop on green building techniques was held for Ministry staff, utilizing IFC-EDGE’s energy-efficient solutions.

Dangiwa instructed that all Ministry projects prioritize sustainability and align with global climate adaptation and mitigation strategies.

Dr. Maduekwe emphasized the need for stronger cooperation between the Ministry and NCCC to achieve shared goals.

She informed the Minister about the review of Nigeria’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) for international alignment.

Maduekwe requested the Ministry establish a climate change desk and nominate a representative for the National Steering Committee.

The meeting concluded with the presentation of the Climate Change Act to Minister Dangiwa, reinforcing government commitment.
