In a renewed push to tackle Nigeria’s pressing development challenges, state governors under the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) convened in Abuja this week to strategize on national security, housing, and electricity reform.

The high-level meeting brought together governors from all 36 states, alongside key federal officials and private sector stakeholders. Top on the agenda were strategies to address the growing insecurity, the widening housing deficit, and the need for improved power supply across the country.

The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, led discussions on national security, offering an update on the current security situation and efforts to combat threats from insurgents, bandits, and other non-state actors. He emphasized the importance of closer collaboration between the military and state governments in restoring peace.

Also briefing the forum was the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Arc. Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, who outlined federal housing initiatives and policy reforms aimed at creating affordable and inclusive housing schemes. He urged state governments to adopt complementary frameworks to accelerate housing delivery at the grassroots level.

Private energy sector representatives also made a presentation, showcasing innovative, decentralized power solutions designed to boost energy access in underserved areas. Governors expressed interest in adopting tailored energy strategies for their respective states to overcome long-standing power supply issues.

In a joint statement issued at the end of the session, the governors pledged to work collectively to implement action plans on security, housing, and electricity.

“We recognize the urgent need to improve the living standards of our people. Today’s dialogue is a step toward building stronger partnerships for a more secure and prosperous Nigeria,” said Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde.

The forum resolved to establish a standing committee to interface with federal agencies and private investors to fast-track implementation of agreed solutions in each focus area.
