Governor Seyi Makinde has pledged to prosecute any chief or individual found guilty of accepting bribes during the selection process for the new Alaafin of Oyo.
This follows a controversy over the appointment of Prince Akeem Owoade as the 46th Alaafin, which was opposed by five kingmakers (Oyomesi), who claimed they did not recommend him to the state government for ratification.
The Oyomesi insisted that the only candidate they had recommended was Prince Luqman Gbadegesin. Despite their objections, Governor Makinde emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability in the selection process, underscoring that the Alaafin is not just a traditional ruler but also a custodian of the rich cultural and historical heritage of the Oyo Kingdom.
Governor Makinde expressed confidence that Oba Owoade would lead with wisdom and integrity, ensuring the unity and progress of Oyo Kingdom. In his response, Oba Owoade thanked the people of Oyo for their support and promised to focus on the development of the kingdom, prioritizing youth empowerment, cultural preservation, and economic growth.
The new monarch’s coronation follows tensions surrounding the selection process, with the case currently under legal consideration. The Bashorun of Oyo, High Chief Yusuf Akinade, has referred media inquiries to their lawyer, citing the ongoing court case.
