Germany, Italy Open Applications for Skilled Workers to Address Labor Shortages

Germany and Italy have officially opened applications for skilled foreign workers in 2025 as both countries face labor shortages driven by aging populations and declining birth rates.

The move aims to attract professionals across key industries to sustain economic growth and maintain essential services.

Italy plans to issue 165,000 work visas under its Decreto Flussi program, covering both seasonal and non-seasonal employment.

The country has also allocated 10,000 additional visas for caregivers, recognizing the increasing demand for elder care. Sectors such as healthcare, tourism, construction, and agriculture are expected to benefit the most.

Germany, on the other hand, is expanding its Skilled Immigration Act and introducing the Chancenkarte (Opportunity Card), a points-based system that allows skilled workers to apply without a prior job offer. The country aims to bring in 400,000 foreign workers annually to fill critical roles in healthcare, IT, engineering, and logistics.

Both nations are intensifying efforts to attract global talent, making 2025 a pivotal year for skilled professionals seeking employment opportunities in Europe.
