The Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA) has sought to calm public fears regarding the recent earth tremors in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Residents of Mpape, an Abuja suburb in Bwari Area Council, had expressed concerns following a minor tremor felt in the community.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, NGSA Director-General Professor Olusegun Ige urged residents to remain calm. He assured that the tremors were minor and did not pose a serious threat to the environment.
Professor Ige explained that the NGSA had been monitoring the seismic activity, noting that while several ground motions had been recorded over recent days, their intensity was low.

The Monitoring Station (NGSA-5) at Katampe reported multiple seismic events from September 13 to September 17, 2024, with the tremors becoming more frequent but remaining at low intensity levels.
The statement detailed that the tremors were caused by accumulated stress along identified faults and were characterized by weak to light intensity, ranging from III to IV on the Modified Mercalli Scale. The epicenters were primarily located northeast of the NGSA-5 Seismic Station, around the Mpape axis, and to a lesser extent, southwest near the Katampe axis.

“The tremors experienced are generally low and do not pose a significant threat,” said Professor Ige. “We advise residents in Mpape, Katampe, Maitama, and other affected areas not to panic. NGSA is closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates as necessary.”
The NGSA also emphasized that their Seismic Stations are continuously monitored to ensure timely alerts for any significant seismic events.
