At least 25 people have been confirmed dead after flash floods ravaged Yemen’s northwestern province of Al-Mahwit, a local health source reported on Wednesday.
The floods, triggered by over 24 hours of heavy rainfall, led to the collapse of three dams and swept away numerous houses in the Malhan district on Tuesday. Rescue operations are currently ongoing, with several villagers still missing, according to local authorities.
Earlier this month, similar heavy rains and flash floods in the northern provinces of Hodeidah and Hajjah claimed 45 lives and damaged over 12,000 homes.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has raised concerns about the potential spread of diseases due to contaminated water and poor sanitation during the ongoing rainy season in the conflict-ridden country.
Yemen has been embroiled in a civil war since late 2014, when the Houthi group seized control of several northern provinces, forcing the Yemeni government to flee the capital, Sanaa. The ongoing conflict has exacerbated the country’s vulnerability to natural disasters like these devastating floods.
