Tragedy struck in the Ojodu-Berger area of Lagos as a three-storey building collapsed on Saturday, claiming the lives of five individuals and injuring several others.
The structure, situated at 9 & 10 Oremeta Street, was said to house a restaurant, with employees and customers inside when the building gave way. Initial reports confirmed one death, but authorities have since updated the toll following ongoing rescue operations.
According to Mr. Ibrahim Farinloye of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), five bodies — comprising two men and three women — have been recovered from the rubble. Meanwhile, 15 people were pulled out alive, including nine men and six women.
Emergency teams from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) have cordoned off the area and continue to search for any possible survivors. Safety precautions have also been enforced to prevent further danger as investigations into the cause of the collapse begin.
