Fire guts Enugu timber market

On Tuesday, tragedy struck Kenyatta Street’s timber market in Uwani, Enugu, as fire ravaged five shops.

Fortunately, swift action by the state Fire Service prevented the blaze from spreading further into the plywood market. A firefighter, speaking on condition of anonymity, disclosed that the service received a distress call around 9:45 pm alerting them to the inferno. Responding promptly, they managed to contain the fire before it engulfed more of the market.

The firefighter, declining to provide further details, stated, “As you can see, only about five shops were affected by the fire in this big market. I cannot say much on this incident as I am not the Chief Fire Officer.”

Eyewitness Joe, recounting the incident to reporters, noted that he first noticed the fire shortly after the nationwide industrial strike by labour unions ended. He expressed gratitude for the swift response of neighbors and the fire service, emphasizing that without their intervention, the situation could have been far more catastrophic.
