FG Warns 176 LGAs, Over 1,200 Communities Face Serious Flood Threat in 2025

The Federal Government has issued a strong warning. More than 1,200 communities in 176 local government areas across 30 states and the Federal Capital Territory may face serious flooding in 2025. This update comes from the 2025 Annual Flood Outlook released in Abuja.

Professor Joseph Terlumun Utsev, Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, revealed that another 2,187 communities in 293 local government areas may also see moderate flooding. He called flooding one of Nigeria’s most damaging natural disasters.

This year, the government is focusing more on helping individual communities prepare. The new approach tailors flood warnings to specific locations. This will help residents and local leaders respond quickly and effectively before the rains begin.

Several states, including Adamawa, Lagos, Anambra, Delta, Rivers, Kogi, Kwara, Bayelsa, and Benue, are among the areas at high risk. These states were identified based on past flood history and current risk levels.

The report includes three key points. First, it outlines areas where floods are likely to happen. Second, it turns the forecast into clear action steps. Third, it gives suggestions on how to reduce the risk. Officials urge local leaders and communities to start preparing now.

Permanent Secretary Richard Pheelangwah stressed that the flood warning is not just data. It is a life-saving tool. He encouraged everyone to treat it seriously and act fast. Umar Ibrahim Mohammed, head of the hydrological agency, added that better technology and teamwork have made this year’s outlook more accurate than ever.

This flood outlook signals a new direction for Nigeria’s disaster planning. It highlights the importance of science, early action, and strong communities. As the rainy season draws near, the government is asking everyone in at-risk areas to stay alert, plan ahead, and work together to stay safe.
