FG Unveils Plan to Deliver 100,000 Social Housing Units Across Nigeria

The Federal Government has announced plans to construct 100,000 social housing units for vulnerable groups across all 774 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Nigeria.

The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Arc. Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, disclosed this on January 29, 2025, during his presentation at the 4th Edition of the Real Estate Future Forum in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

According to a statement on the ministry’s website, the initiative will be implemented through a Comprehensive Nationwide Social Housing Delivery Programme, aimed at expanding housing access for low-income earners and vulnerable populations.

Bridging Nigeria’s Housing Deficit
Dangiwa highlighted Nigeria’s housing deficit, which exceeds 20 million units, describing it as both a significant challenge and an investment opportunity. He stressed the need for large-scale intervention, stating that bridging the gap requires building 500,000 housing units annually over the next decade.

To address this, the government is rolling out the Renewed Hope Cities and Estates Programme, targeting the delivery of 100,000 homes in its first phase. The initiative will establish integrated communities catering to both high-income and low- to middle-income earners, fostering inclusive urban development.

Call for Global Investment
Recognizing the scale of the housing crisis, Dangiwa urged global investors, housing finance institutions, and developers to collaborate with the Nigerian government through Public-Private Partnerships (PPP).

He assured potential investors of a business-friendly environment, promising access to land, bankable offtake guarantees, and necessary concessions to facilitate profitable partnerships.

“The housing challenge in Nigeria is not just a problem; it is a massive opportunity for investment,” Dangiwa said.
“By partnering with us, investors can play a crucial role in shaping the future of Nigerian housing while securing substantial returns.”

Boosting Local Manufacturing and Reducing Costs
Beyond housing construction, the government is also investing in Building Materials Manufacturing Hubs (BMMHs) in each of Nigeria’s six geo-political zones.

These hubs aim to:

Reduce reliance on imported building materials
Lower construction costs
Stimulate industrial growth
Create jobs and drive economic development
Dangiwa emphasized that strengthening the local building materials industry is crucial for making housing more affordable and ensuring long-term sustainability in Nigeria’s real estate sector.

With these initiatives, the Federal Government aims to transform Nigeria’s housing landscape, ensuring that more citizens have access to decent, affordable shelter.
