Security agencies in Abuja have arrested some suspects involved in the removal of sewage manhole covers from highways. Efforts are also underway to apprehend their collaborators, including buyers of the stolen covers.
This was disclosed in a press statement by Mr. Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant (Public Communications and New Media) to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike. The statement highlighted the Minister’s directive to relevant stakeholders to intensify efforts to end this act of vandalism, with further updates to be shared with the public soon.
Minister Wike expressed dismay over the “devilish” actions of those removing and selling manhole covers, noting the severe risk they pose to road users. He condemned the practice, emphasizing the irony of public funds being used to provide amenities, only for some individuals to steal and resell them, endangering their fellow Nigerians.
The Minister vowed that the government would ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
He also commended the patriotism of the individual who recorded and shared the viral video exposing the theft, describing it as a much-needed example of civic responsibility.
This move signals the FCT administration’s determination to address acts of vandalism and protect public infrastructure in Abuja.
