The Ekiti State Government has officially prohibited the use of laterite base material in the construction of roads across the state.
This new directive has emanated from the Commissioner for Works, Mr. Adesola Adebayo, during a two-day media tour to highlight major infrastructural projects in the administration of Governor Biodun Oyebanji.
Speaking with contractors in Ikole Ekiti, Mr. Adebayo warned that the government would not take it lightly on any contractor compromising the standard of roads. He also revealed that road contractors are to use crushed stones as the base before laying asphalt. This is to ensure that the changes do not wear out over time.
“The base is the foundation for a long-lasting road, and getting the right material will be key to ensuring that the invested value of the funds is guaranteed,” Adebayo said.

The commissioner restated the government’s preparedness to ensure infrastructure provision. He noted that the road projects being undertaken would help decongest the metropolis and create interconnectivity within the state, which will, in turn, aid economic activities. He listed 19 roads that are at various stages of completion, construction, and rehabilitation.
This includes the construction of the Ilawe-Ikere Road, Igbara Odo-Ikere Road, Iloro-Ijurin Road, Ipoti-Ilukuno-Oke Oro Road, and the newly planned Ado Ring Road. The list also includes in-town projects such as the Ado Township roads, Faglo-Dehead Road, and the Ajilosun to Okeyinmi Flyover Bridge.

Speaking on the significance of the media tour, the Commissioner for Information, Rt. Hon. Taiwo Olatunbosun disclosed that the event was organized to uphold transparency and inclusiveness in the administration. He said the tour provided a window for public scrutiny of the government’s efforts and ensured that the public had good insight into the state’s development plans. Members of the State Executive Council, the Chairman of the Ekiti State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Mr. Kayode Babatuyi, and other distinguished media executives and correspondents were part of the tour.
