The Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) has increased its gaseous emission levy to N200,000, sparking backlash from business owners already struggling with inflation and erratic power supply.
A notice from AMAC cited constitutional provisions and environmental regulations as the legal basis for the charge, targeting emissions from generators, manufacturing equipment, and industrial processes.

Last year, the levy was set at N100,000, but AMAC’s Director of Public Health had described it as negotiable.
The Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) has criticized the levy, arguing that it is not in the public’s best interest and should be suspended.
AMAC’s spokesperson declined to confirm the increase.
