After 11 Years, Widow Still Fights for Replacement of Demolished Lagos Home, Appeals to Sanwo-Olu

Mrs. Elizabeth Adetoun Ajibola’s life changed completely on September 26, 1992, when her husband died in a military crash.

Major Olatokunbo Mohammed Ajibola was among officers who perished in the ill-fated C-130 aircraft disaster at Ejigbo, Lagos State.

Left with two sons, Lagos State initially provided relief by allocating her a three-bedroom apartment at LMB Estate, Isolo.

The apartment offered much-needed shelter, and she expressed gratitude to the Lagos State government for its timely intervention.

However, in December 2012, structural defects led to the demolition of her home, forcing her into an uncertain situation.

Some affected widows received compensation and alternative housing, but she was inexplicably excluded from the resettlement program.

Over the past eleven years, she has written several letters to different Lagos governors requesting a fair resolution.

Despite appeals to Babatunde Fashola, Akinwunmi Ambode, and Babajide Sanwo-Olu, her housing problem remains unresolved to date.

She also sought intervention from Lagos State Development and Property Corporation and Lagos State Emergency Management Agency.

None of these agencies corrected the oversight, leaving her family struggling with hardship, humiliation, and housing uncertainty.

In 2014, lawyers from Olanusi Gibson and Associates petitioned Governor Fashola, but no action was taken afterward.

When no response came, she personally wrote another letter to Fashola on November 4, 2014, requesting help.

A follow-up letter was sent to LASEMA in February 2015, urging them to correct the injustice against her.

In August 2015, she wrote another appeal to Governor Ambode but received no positive response from authorities.

On December 8, 2021, the Ministry of Defence sent a letter asking Lagos State to reconsider her case.

With no action taken, she wrote another appeal to Governor Sanwo-Olu and key officials on March 18, 2024.

A law firm, Adegbenro and Co, also wrote to the governor and LASEMA on her behalf last June.

Despite multiple letters to government officials, she has yet to receive a concrete solution to her predicament.

Public Affairs Officer Ganiu Lawal promised inquiries but has not responded, while another official redirected her elsewhere.

After eleven years of waiting, she remains hopeful that Lagos State will finally grant her rightful housing relief.
