Abia State Government Set to Implement New Minimum Wage in October

The Abia State Government has announced that workers across all sectors will begin receiving the newly approved minimum wage starting in October 2024.

The announcement was made by Okey Kanu, the Commissioner for Information, during a media briefing following a State Executive Council meeting led by Governor Alex Otti.

Kanu emphasized that the new wage structure will apply to “every category of workers,” ensuring that the updated salaries are distributed fairly across the workforce.

In addition to the new wage announcement, Kanu revealed plans to improve the state’s judicial system by constructing court halls in all 17 local government areas. This initiative aims to enhance the administration of justice throughout the state.

He also announced a forthcoming health initiative, where the Ministry of Health will conduct a free medical outreach in Ugwunnagbo next week. The outreach will provide services such as free consultations, maternal and child health care, and diagnostic tests at no cost to residents.

Kanu also highlighted Governor Otti’s commitment to supporting local athletes, particularly para-athletes who have brought honor to the state. Among those to be recognized are Miss Onyinyechi Mark, who won a gold medal in the 61 kg category, and Miss Esther Nworgu, who earned a silver medal in the 41 kg category. Governor Otti plans to celebrate their achievements in the coming weeks.
