The Abia State Government has officially ended the grace period for the public to submit title documents for recertification, as of August 30, 2024.
This announcement was made by the Commissioner for Land and Housing, Chaka Ikenna Chukwumerije, during a press briefing in Umuahia on Wednesday.
Chukwumerije revealed that the government has revoked allocations in key government layouts, including public servants’ (Castle Lairage) at Mgbarakuma, Mgbarakuma Mini Layout, Mbaisii Layout, and Valley View Estates Phases 1 and 2, effective immediately. Additionally, all allocations in the Umuopara and Nkpa Abia State Estate Development Agency project areas have been suspended.

The Commissioner issued a strong warning to those encroaching or conducting transactions in the Ogo Nsukwe and Amibo Ubakala estates, stating that they will face legal consequences.
Chukwumerije emphasized that title documents not submitted for recertification by the deadline will no longer be accepted by the Ministry of Land and Housing or any related planning authorities until they are properly recertified. He explained that the policy is part of a larger effort to improve urban planning and streamline land records for efficient management and administration in Abia State.
The Commissioner further noted that documents submitted so far are being verified, and his office has initiated the invalidation of titles for transactions that have not undergone recertification.
Chukwumerije outlined the objectives of the recertification process, including reviewing and updating land records, upgrading survey records to Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) standards, and incorporating the Abia State Social Security Identification Number (ABSSIN) into land management systems.

In addition, Chukwumerije revealed that the government uncovered cases of property owners holding just one certificate despite being allocated multiple properties by previous administrations, highlighting the importance of the ongoing review process.
This move by the Abia State Government is part of a broader initiative to ensure proper land use, transparency, and efficient land management throughout the state.
