Residents of the Sabo area in Osogbo, the capital of Osun State, were gripped with fear on Sunday, July 14, when an abandoned building, allegedly used by hoodlums, collapsed.
Reports indicate that five people were trapped inside the building when it collapsed around 7:30 am. The uncompleted, abandoned storey building had been a known hideout for hoodlums before its collapse.
A local source, Tunde, revealed that the building was a den for cultists and other criminals, and had been raided several times by security operatives. “As I am talking to you, security operatives with rescue teams have arrived at the scene. They have brought in a crane and have rescued three people from the rubble,” he said.

The spokesperson of the Nigerian Security Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) Osun State Command, Kehinde Adeleke, confirmed the incident. She stated, “Following our earlier report on June 10, 2024, regarding an uncompleted building used as a residence by hoodlums near AUD primary school, Sabo Elegun, the building collapsed around 07:30 hrs today, entrapping five people.”
Adeleke continued, “Two people have been rescued so far, while the remaining three are trapped under the decking that requires the use of a crane. While we await the crane, people are doing all they can within their physical capacity to break the decking and connected rods.”

On the scene were the SSG, the NSCDC, the Police Commissioner, and other government officials. The LGA chairman and his team were working to bring the crane to the site to expedite the rescue efforts.
