Ekiti State workers, led by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), have taken to the streets of Ado-Ekiti to protest against the prevailing hunger and economic challenges in the state.
The protest, which was mandated by the NLC’s national body, saw workers from various sectors demonstrating for urgent solutions to alleviate their hardship.
The protest, which began at the Governor’s Office Junction, moved through Okesa, Erekesan to Fajuyi, under heavy police presence to ensure the safety of the protesters. Workers, dressed in their various union uniforms, carried placards with messages such as “Cement price for #7000 now,” “Say no to hunger,” “Reduce fuel price to #100 per litre,” and “Stop subsidizing the rich, let the poor breathe.”
Mr. Kolapo Olatunde, the NLC Chairman in Ekiti State, expressed concern over the skyrocketing prices of food and other essential commodities, making life unbearable for the average Nigerian. He called on President Tinubu to engage with stakeholders to find lasting solutions to the economic challenges facing the country.

The protesters later gathered at Fajuyi center, where they blocked roads leading to Oba Market, Bashiri, and Adebayo areas for nearly two hours to drive home their demands.
While commending Governor Biodun Oyebanji for the recent payment of pensioners and civil servants’ arrears, Kolapo highlighted the need for further action, noting that cooperative deductions still remained unpaid. He also urged the federal government to address their demands before the protest concludes on Thursday, 28th February.
