The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Mr. Nyesom Wike, has revealed plans to prohibit unpainted taxis and buses from operating on the roads in the nation’s capital, as part of measures to combat the ‘one chance’ phenomenon in the city.

In a recent media interaction in Abuja, Wike emphasized that while the threat of ‘one chance’ had been mitigated, stricter measures were essential to eradicate this trend in the FCT.

“We will not permit vehicles lacking FCT color and registration by the FCTA to engage in commercial activities within the territory. This ensures that the driver is certified by the FCT, and the vehicles have received approval from the authorities,” he stated.

The minister highlighted the need for passengers to have confidence in the safety of their transportation choices, emphasizing that only certified drivers and approved vehicles would be allowed.

Wike also announced that Uber operators would be required to register for operation in Abuja, ensuring the government has information about their identities. He stressed the importance of drivers being certified and profiled by security agencies to maintain order in the city.

“This city needs regulations; otherwise, issues will arise,” Wike remarked, expressing concern over the absence of an official terminal where residents can board buses to specific destinations.

In addressing this concern, he revealed plans to construct three terminals in the 2024 fiscal year. These terminals would serve as designated points where residents could board buses, ensuring transparency in the identification of drivers and vehicles.

“Once implemented, residents won’t take the risk of flagging down a taxi on the road. This strategic move aims to reduce crime and enhance the overall safety of transportation within the capital territory,” Wike added.
