In a decisive move against the escalating kidnapping cases in the federal capital, President Bola Tinubu has granted the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, approval to acquire cutting-edge tracking equipment. The minister revealed this development during an exclusive interview with select media organizations in Abuja on Monday.
Abuja has experienced a surge in kidnapping incidents, with over 20 reported cases since the start of the year, prompting Wike to assertively address the situation. The approved purchase includes specialized digital tracking tools designed to enhance the efficiency of security agencies in their operations.
Wike, expressing determination to make Abuja inhospitable for kidnappers, emphasized the government’s commitment to taking all necessary steps to ensure the safety of residents. He highlighted the lack of essential facilities, such as security vehicles and up-to-date tracking equipment, which has hindered swift responses to criminal activities.
The minister drew on his experience as the former Governor of Rivers state, recalling how a specific piece of equipment, though expensive, played a crucial role in crime reduction. With the President’s approval for emergency procurement, Wike aims to provide security agencies with the necessary tools to combat crime effectively.
Wike underscored the importance of not just acquiring equipment but also motivating security personnel. He hinted at undisclosed strategies and mentioned ongoing efforts to address security challenges comprehensively.
Revealing that security agencies have already apprehended some informants working with kidnappers, Wike assured the public that everything possible is being done to protect lives and property. The obtained information has led to the arrest of kidnappers, showcasing the effectiveness of collaborative efforts.
Looking ahead, Wike outlined plans to establish a Joint Task Force in the Federal Capital Territory, equipped with a full command and control structure to respond swiftly to security emergencies. While unable to create a dedicated security agency like subnational entities, the administration aims to bridge existing gaps in Abuja’s security infrastructure.
