The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has revealed that more than 20 houses were impacted in the explosion that shook the Bodija area of Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, on Tuesday night. In a statement released on Wednesday, NEMA stated that casualty figures were not yet available but disclosed that a suspected Improvised Explosive Device (IED) caused the explosion.
The incident, which caused panic among Ibadan residents, occurred at Dejo Oyelese Street in the Bodija area.
NEMA assured the public that security has been reinforced in the affected region, and arrangements for additional support to facilitate ongoing search and rescue operations are underway. The agency reported, “the situation has been brought under control while arrangements are going on to ensure smooth operation.”
In response to the explosion, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde conducted a preliminary investigation, revealing that explosive devices stored by illegal miners caused the blast. While further investigations are ongoing, Governor Makinde assured that anyone found responsible would be held accountable.
He also pledged government support, stating that the “medical bills of victims will be picked by the government” and promising assistance for those whose houses were affected to rebuild their lives.

The Oyo State Police Command confirmed the explosion on Tuesday night, indicating that the number of casualties was still unknown. The police assured the public of an increased deployment of personnel to prevent any breakdown of law and order.
The state government, through its official X handle, urged residents to evacuate the incident scene to facilitate ongoing emergency and rescue efforts without interference. It was reported that search and rescue operations, utilizing earth-moving equipment, continued throughout the night and remain ongoing, with regular updates promised by the government.
