The Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu is set to resume full flight operations on Monday, April 28, 2025, following the completion of emergency runway repairs, the Federal Government announced on Saturday.

In a statement signed by the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mrs. Obiageli Orah, authorities confirmed that the repair work, which began last week, has been successfully concluded.

Operations at the airport were suspended seven days ago after a sudden rupture was detected on a critical section of the runway. The emergency closure, FAAN said, was necessary to ensure passenger and aircraft safety.

“Rehabilitation works on the runway have been completed, and the runway has been cleared for safe landings and takeoffs,” the statement read. FAAN also expressed gratitude to passengers, airlines, and stakeholders for their patience during the disruption.

The Akanu Ibiam International Airport has undergone several rounds of rehabilitation in recent years. In 2019, the Federal Government approved N10 billion for runway extension and upgrades, awarded to PW Construction Company under former Aviation Minister, Hadi Sirika. Earlier in 2014, under the tenure of Princess Stella Oduah, major remodeling of the airport was carried out with funding from a $500 million Chinese loan facility.

The latest closure came shortly after Air Peace suspended its flights to Enugu, citing concerns over the condition of the runway.

FAAN reassured travelers that all actions were taken with safety as the top priority and apologized for any inconvenience caused during the period of closure.
