In a landmark move to improve the quality of life in Sokoto State, Governor Ahmed Aliyu has restored electricity to eight local government areas in the Eastern Senatorial Zone—communities that have endured nearly ten years without power.

The reconnection, which marks a significant milestone in the state’s infrastructure renewal efforts, was disclosed by the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Sokoto, Alhaji Isa Sadiq, during a press briefing in the state capital.

According to Alhaji Sadiq, the restoration of power supply demonstrates Governor Aliyu’s resolve to stimulate economic growth and enhance social well-being in underserved communities.

“This initiative is more than just about lights—it’s about economic revival and dignity,” Sadiq said. “The governor is taking deliberate steps to restore power and attract investments by revitalising long-neglected areas.”

As part of his administration’s broader energy agenda, Governor Aliyu also completed the long-abandoned Independent Power Plant (IPP) at a cost of N950 million. The project is expected to play a pivotal role in reviving dormant industries and improving electricity access across Sokoto State.

In addition to improving energy supply, the state government is tackling the transportation challenges that have intensified following the removal of fuel subsidies. Sadiq revealed that Governor Aliyu’s administration has introduced a comprehensive public transport system to ease mobility across the state.

The state has procured 110 mass transit buses and taxi cabs for intra- and inter-city services, with 46 buses dedicated specifically to inter-local government transit. For riverine communities, the government has also provided 20 motorised boats and 1,000 life jackets to improve safety and accessibility on waterways.

“These services are being subsidised to ensure affordability,” he explained. “The goal is to provide safe, reliable, and cost-effective transportation for all residents.”

Sadiq emphasized that these projects underscore the administration’s commitment to strategic infrastructure development aimed at transforming the lives of Sokoto residents.
