In a heartwarming development that has drawn national attention and praise, Family Homes Funds Limited (FHFL) is extending the gift of homeownership to widows across Nigeria, an initiative many did not believe existed, especially beyond the country’s borders.
As part of its mandate to support low-income families with affordable housing, FHFL has partnered with various organizations to build and allocate housing units specifically for widows, reinforcing its mission of inclusive and compassionate development.
So far, the initiative includes 100 housing units in Kaduna, specifically targeting widows through the ADASHE Women Empowerment Estate in Rigachukwu; 50 housing units in Ibadan, developed in collaboration with the Post Service Housing Development Ltd (Army) to support the widows of fallen military personnel; and 70 housing units in Calabar, in partnership with the Cross River State Ministry of Housing, focused on widows in need of shelter and stability.
This effort reflects a growing commitment by FHFL to bridge the housing gap for vulnerable groups, particularly widows, who are often left without support or shelter following the loss of their spouses.
Reacting to this development, the Housing Development Advocacy Network (HDAN) commended FHFL’s board and management, describing the move as “timely and highly commendable,” especially in a period when many Nigerians are in dire need of housing support.
The Executive Director of HDAN, Festus Adebayo, hailed the initiative, urging FHFL to extend similar support to widows of police officers, naval officers, and soldiers who lost their lives in the line of duty. He said:
“This is a commendable step in the right direction. However, we encourage Family Homes Funds Limited to continue ensuring that every house financed or built under its platform is occupied. Any abandoned project should be looked into and completed. Shelter is a human right, and FHFL is helping to protect that right.”
He further emphasized that building homes is not enough, the real impact comes when those homes are lived in, creating real change in the lives of the intended beneficiaries.HDAN used the opportunity to speak on the report of incomplete and abandoned housing projects they have recently compiled.
With this bold move of housing the poor, Family Homes Funds Limited is not just constructing buildings, it is rebuilding hope, dignity, and stability for some of the most vulnerable members of Nigerian society.
